The Art and Science of Stress
This installation is a collaboration project. Our team consists of a human developmental scientist (Rachel Koffer), a documentary photographer (Anna Margush), and me, a new media artist who specializes in animation.
Our project aims to bring a more personal connection to stress research data, as well as an understanding of how art and science can come together to show the viewer a more complete picture of human emotional responses to various daily stressors. Rather than just making the science pretty, or making the art more numerical, we wanted to show the interrelatedness of the two disciplines. We wanted to create something that would be equally engaging and accessible to people on both sides and show how the two are connected.

The Art and Science of Stress
Dengke Chen (Graphic and Animation), Anna Margush (Photograph), Rachel Koffer (Research and Data) Installation 2013 |
Graphical displays from stress research and photographs of an individual experiencing stressors can be thought of as simply two different forms of data - numeric and narrative. The relationships between the media of three disciplines - empirical data, photographs, and animations - are explored through integrated projections in order to demonstrate the common aim of these different media - to explore and illuminate daily human experience.
